Common Dumpster Sizes

We offer all of the standard US roll off dumpster sizes, which are 10 cubic yards, 15 cubic yards, 20 cubic yards, 30 cubic yards and 40 cubic yards.

The dumpster's name is equivalent to the volume it can hold. For example, a 10 Yard Dumpster can hold 10 cubic yards of debris. A dumpster's capacity and volume are measured in cubic yards, and each cubic yard equals 27 square feet.

The roll off dumpster size you need depends on how much material you are throwing out, the length of your project, and the type of material you are throwing out.

What Roll Off Dumpster Size Do I Need?

When determining the right dumpster size for you, consider the scope of your project, specifically:

  1. The type of material you are discarding

  2. The amount of debris you are discarding

  3. How long your project will last

If you have an ongoing project, you'll want to rent a larger size like a 30 or 40 yard to make sure you have enough room for your waste. If you have a smaller project like an attic cleanout, you'll be better off with a 10 or 15 yard dumpster.

Why is choosing the right dumpster size important?

It's important to choose the right dumpster size to avoid several things:

  1. Avoid overage fees: Overage fees occur when your dumpster is above its weight limit. If you try and overstuff a dumpster that is too small, you may end up having to pay an overage fee if your dumpster is too heavy.

  2. Avoid overloading fees: Overloading fees happen when you fill your dumpster above the top of the rim. This is a safety hazard for our haulers and if your dumpster is filled incorrectly, we may not be able to haul it to a facility.

  3. Avoid renting another dumpster: If you are coming to the end of your dumpster's capacity and still have waste to discard, you may need to rent another dumpster. This can be avoided as long as you choose a dumpster size that is big enough to hold all of your waste.

What Is A Cubic Yard?

In order to understand how big a dumpster is, you should know how big one cubic yard is.

A cubic yard is a measure of volume. 1 cubic yard will take up a space that is 3ft long by 3ft wide by 3ft high, or 27 cubic feet (3 x 3 x 3).

A 10 yard dumpster is equal to 270 cubic feet (10 x 27), a 20 yard dumpster is equal to 540 cubic ft (20 x 27), and so on.

FAQ About Dumpster Sizes

Here are answers to some common questions you may have about roll off dumpster sizes.

A roll off dumpster is measured by its length x feet x height. This gives us the square foot capacity that dumpster can hold. For example, a 20 yard dumpster can be measured by its dimensions which are 3.5 x 8 x 22. This means that a 20 yard dumpster can hold 616 square feet of material.

The "yard" in dumpster sizes refers to the fact that dumpsters are measured in cubic yards, which is a unit of measurement that equals 27 square feet.

Each dumpster size weighs a different amount depending on the manufacturer, however on average, this is the weight of each dumpster size:

  • A 10 yard dumpster typically weighs around 1,000 to 1,500 pounds.

  • A 15 yard dumpster typically weighs around 1,500 to 2,500 pounds.

  • A 20 yard dumpster typically weighs around 2,000 to 3,500 pounds.

  • A 30 yard dumpster typically weighs around 2,500 to 5,000 pounds.

  • A 40 yard dumpster typically weighs around 3,500 to 6,000 pounds.

These estimates are based on typical steel roll-off dumpsters used in the waste management industry.

The difference between a 10 and 15 yard roll off dumpster is the capacity they can hold. 15 yard dumpsters are a little bigger than 10 yards and can hold 5 more cubic yards worth of material. This is the same for 15 vs. 20 yard dumpsters, 20 vs. 30 yard dumpsters, etc.

Roll off dumpsters vary in width depending on their manufacturer. However, most roll off dumpsters tend to be 7.5 or 8 feet wide.

The weight limit for dumpsters varies with the type of debris being disposed of and the local regulations in your area. However, here are some rough estimates of the weight limits for common dumpster sizes:

  • A 10 yard dumpster typically has a weight limit of 2,000 to 4,000 pounds.

  • A 15 yard dumpster typically has a weight limit of 2,500 to 5,500 pounds.

  • A 20 yard dumpster typically has a weight limit of 3,000 to 6,000 pounds.

  • A 30 yard dumpster typically has a weight limit of 4,000 to 8,000 pounds.

  • A 40 yard dumpster typically has a weight limit of 5,000 to 10,000 pounds.
